About

Mission

The Carolee Schneemann Foundation is dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Carolee Schneemann (1939–2019). Established by the artist in 2013, the Foundation advances the understanding of Schneemann’s work through scholarship, exhibitions, and publications. Over the next few years, the Foundation will establish a residency program at Schneemann’s home in upstate New York in order to support artists whose work shares Schneemann’s commitment to new methods of aesthetic experimentation.

The Foundation on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility

In her lifetime, Carolee Schneemann worked to create a more inclusive and respectful space for artists. The Foundation works to critically engage in how our organization can best support and build upon Carolee’s practice. We are dedicated to removing barriers that exist within the art world, whether those be for artists or those working within art institutions. We look forward to continuing the dialogue regarding the best ways we can function as an organization committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.

Land Acknowledgement

The Foundation recognizes and respects that the land on which we assemble is the homeland of the Munsee Lenape people. We are committed to paying honor and respect to their ancestors while engaging with and celebrating their existing community today. We recognize and act upon our responsibility to preserve the environmental and historical integrity of this territory. We hope that through this land acknowledgement and a committed continual relationship with the Munsee-Lenape, we can empower and strengthen their community.

Historic Artists' Homes and Studios Affiliate Member

In 2025, Schneemann's home in New Paltz, NY was selected to join the coalition of Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios (HAHS) as an Affiliate site. A program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, HAHS is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the places where art was made.

Schneemann’s home is itself a historic 1750s residence and is now conserved as a living archive of her work. The home and studio where Schneemann lived and worked from 1965 until her death includes her extensive personal library, archives, and artistic interventions embedded throughout the structure.

W.A.G.E. Certification

In 2020, the Carolee Schneemann Foundation became the first W.A.G.E. - certified art foundation. The Schneemann Foundation is proud to commit to fair compensation and creating a minimum standard for fees and services in the art world.

Working Artists and the Greater Economy (W.A.G.E.) is a New York-based activist organization founded in 2008. Their mission is to establish sustainable economic relationships between artists and the institutions that contract labor, and to introduce mechanisms for self-regulation into the art field that collectively bring about a more equitable distribution of its economy.
